Bee House, Oxfordshire - Structural and Civil Design Services

MEPC aspired to create a new collaborative workspace at Milton Park in Oxfordshire with open, flexible working spaces. Their goal was to create a BREEAM Excellent rated building with sustainability at its core. They engaged our team to provide a civil and structural design focused on repurposing and refurbishing their three-story 1990s office building with under-croft car parking.

Structurally, we lowered the ground floor slab to increase the serviced area of the building. We also created a contemporary long-span picture frame entrance supporting the existing roof truss. After analysing the load paths throughout the existing steel frame, we designed central light wells and a new cantilevering glazed pod through the southern elevation at the first and second floors.

Working closely with the landscape architect, we developed a sustainable urban drainage system. By diverting surface water from the roof and hard landscaping area through bioretention planters, it slows and cleans the water before discharging into an adjoining water course. This biodiverse area also creates an inviting outdoor community space.

The BREEAM Excellent rated, sustainable, and biodiverse Bee House offers one of Oxfordshire’s largest coworking and flexible serviced office spaces.
