Barking Riverside ¨C Brownfield Residential Development
Located in the heart of the Thames Gateway on the former Barking Power Station site, Barking Riverside stands as one of the UK's largest brownfield residential sites and one of Europe¡¯s largest urban developments. Barking Riverside offers a diverse mix of housing within a new people-centred London neighbourhood.
On behalf of Barking Riverside Limited¡ªa joint venture between the Mayor of London and housing association L&Q (London & Quadrant Housing Trust)¡ªwe¡¯ve been providing planning services for more than 20 years, including securing the original outline planning permission for 10,800 homes. As community needs have shifted, we've revisited the vision to make the best use of public investment, anticipating and accommodating political and market changes.
Currently, we¡¯re providing landscape design, urban design, and architectural support for the latest masterplan that aims to increase capacity to 20,000 homes by 2046. We also helped formulate a planning strategy to facilitate phased development of vital public transport using sub-framework plans. Taking place between outline and detailed application phases, this new tier of planning enables the private sector to realise returns while being able to address site-wide risks in the public sector.?
Additionally, we've been involved with the delivery of a new TfL overground extension and station, Uber Boat by Thames Clippers service, and East London Transit bus route.
Barking Riverside provides much needed homes through the creation of an evolving community. A network of play areas, active travel routes offering renewed access to the river, schools, healthcare services, retail, and employment opportunities¡ªall supported by new integrated public transport links¡ªwill empower this vibrant, rejuvenated urban community into the future.
