Powering the future with nuclear energy

As the world embraces different ways to produce and consume energy, nuclear power and small modular reactors (SMR) are set to play a critical role in the energy transition.?

The United Kingdom has a goal to achieve up to 24 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear capacity by 2050¡ªwhich would provide about a quarter of the country¡¯s projected electricity demand. This ambition will require an increase in nuclear generation by up to four times.

Stantec is a leader in influencing and creating safety, environmental, and waste management standards that shape the future of the nuclear industry. We offer a diverse range of advisory and technical assessment services to support all stages of the nuclear lifecycle.

We provide advice through all stages of nuclear new builds and throughout the operational phase, and our development and review of decommissioning strategies facilitate safe site closures and demolition. Our team can also provide a range of technical assessments in the nuclear safety and environmental disciplines to enable nuclear activities to meet regulatory compliance expectations.

Nuclear energy stands at the forefront of a global transformation¡ªat Â鶹´«Ã½, we¡¯re driving the highest levels of safety and environmental protection, helping create energy security, and setting a sustainable foundation for the world¡¯s nuclear energy demands.

Safety and environmental assessments for fuel cycle activities

At the front-end of the nuclear lifecycle, we support organisations that provide uranium enrichment services and fuel cycle products for nuclear power generation. Our work includes managing and developing nuclear safety cases, criticality safety assessments, peer review, and environmental permitting. We help clients continue to develop safe operations and meet their regulatory requirements, and our wider business delivers land quality services to support clients in the fuel cycle production market.

Driving progress through new builds

We advise nuclear new build developers throughout all stages of their projects, enabling intelligent, compliant, and effective progression towards the operation of both gigawatt and small modular reactor scale nuclear plants. Our work includes advisory and technical support for nuclear site licence and environmental permit applications, delivery of a range of nuclear safety case management and assessment services, undertaking siting and environmental assessments, and supporting wider infrastructure activities.

Navigating decommissioning and waste management of the nuclear legacy

We develop and review comprehensive decommissioning strategies to facilitate safe site closures and restoration to an agreed end-state. This work includes supporting the optimisation of waste management from retrieval, through to processing and packaging and eventual final disposal. Our work includes preparing radioactive waste management strategies and packaging proposal support, business case and records management strategy development for disposability, and undertaking appraisal of implementation options.

Providing a greener solution with small modular reactors

Generating reliable, consistent power, while emitting no greenhouse gases, SMRs offer a new dimension to the energy transition. They are smaller, more affordable, often factory built, faster to deploy, more flexible in terms of siting, and have the potential to be privately funded. They have emerged as a solution to high-demand power users. Supporting a new generation of technology-led developers, we advise on the nuclear safety, environmental and waste management features of the plant to make sure designs comply with UK regulations.
