Stephen is passionate about sustainable resource development and ecosystem restoration in Canada’s natural resource sectors. Drawing on his background in boreal ecosystem research, he seeks to apply the principles of ecosystem succession and forest ecology to projects. These help reduce the impacts of natural resource development projects on the environment and return areas to functioning, healthy ecosystems when the projects are done. ?
Combining his experience in wetland and terrestrial ecosystems with Indigenous and local knowledge, Stephen designs ecological communities that help return the land to traditional land-use activities. Currently, he’s working with the community of Deline in the Northwest Territories to establish healthy vegetation communities that reflect past and future land-use objectives for the community at the Great Bear Lake Mines.
When he isn’t working on ecosystem restoration, Stephen enjoys coaching cross-country skiing and spending time outside with his family. ?
